Hudson-Odoi

Graham Turner made three changes from the team who lost so narrowly to Leeds United a week ago. Kris Taylor replaced Matt Done on the left of midfield while Andy Williams and Moses Ashikodi came in for Johnson and Chadwick. Surprisingly neither Chadwick nor Ben Smith was named among the Bulls’ substitutes.

Although this was a game of little incident and little goalmouth action it was, nonetheless, a competitive and entertaining encounter played throughout in a stiff breeze. The Bulls kicked towards the Meadow End in a first period in which they shared the honours with the visitors. Walsall were first to go close – and this five minutes from the interval – when Michael Ricketts turned on the right side of the penalty area and, with his dangerous strike partner Jabo Ibehre in close attendance, rolled a shot just wide of Darren Randolph’s right hand upright.

At the other end Bradley Hudson-Odoi came close to breaking the deadlock on two occasions in the first half’s dying moments. First he rose to head Taylor’s excellent left wing cross narrowly wide of Clayton Ince’s left hand upright. Then he latched onto Andy Williams’ clever flick on and, from the right side of the box, fired on goal from a tight angle with Ince making a comfortable stop at his near post.

The second half period belonged squarely to the home side. Ashikodi led the line bravely and found regular and effective support from Williams and Hudson-Odoi in a 4-3-3 Bulls’ formation. Despite their dominance the Bulls’ really only came close to breaking the deadlock on one occasion. Midway through this second period Taylor fizzed in a low left wing cross which a diving Andy Williams headed agonizingly wide of the right hand post with the Walsall keeper well beaten.

Clayton Ince in the visitors’ goal was clearly struggling with an injury during this second period and, as a result of it, struggled to deal effectively with a succession of Hereford corners. In the seventieth minute he flapped at a Taylor corner and Andy Williams was able to direct it goalwards. The visitors had two defenders on the goal line and between them they hacked the ball to safety just inches from the line.

Hudson – Odoi did roll the loose ball from another Ince failure to gather into the net but only after the referee had whistled for Karl Broadhurst’s pushing.

The game ended in stalemate without either keeper being required to make a serious save and without either side being able to carve out a clear cut scoring opportunity.

For the Bulls this was another hard working display but one in which – despite Taylor’s excellent midfield prompting - they again lacked a cutting edge in the final third. For all Moses Ashikodi’s strength and pace there can be little doubt that the injured Steve Guinan’s better touch and guile would have proved more productive. What the Bulls can take from this performance though is the clean sheet and the manner in which the defence – marshalled by the excellent N’Gotty and Broadhurst – so easily snuffed out the threat from high-flying Walsall’s strike force.

I thought we were much better than Walsall - and we deserved to win. Also the home support was excellent throughout.

  • jnovo

yeah, well done lads, but we still need someone who is going to either create or take chances. no idea why done didn't start or why johnson came on so late, you saw what he did against scunny. what about macdonald, he scored goals all the time when he came last season and i havnt seen him play for west brom this season. anyway, good point lads, keep taking the points and we'll be fine cmon u bulls!

  • Wednesbury_Casual

Good peformance, looked much clamer at the back, and thought Kris Taylor was v good in the second half. Just a mention though to the Meadow End and how great they were too. All in all a much better afternoon.

What a difference when we went back to 4-4-2. Lets play that on Tuesday with the team that'll start against Oldham and get the lads playing the way we know we can. No room for sentiment with fringe players, we need to build on Saturdays performance. COME ON YOU BULLS!!!

  • Perky

I'm VERY frustrated by the 4-5-1 system at home. Andy Williams was FAR better when he was switched to the middle. He is wasted wide on the left, as I have said before. Bruno and Karl were excellent at the back. We should be playing 4-4-2 at home. Bradley Hudson-Odoi is a real talent and should play alongside Willo. Moses can't hold the ball up, so there is no point playing him on his own up front.

hereford came at us second half, walsall were much better 1st half, created chances wat shud of been put away, well done hereford for keeping us at bay,every1 can beat anveryone in this leauge.....like peterbourgh beatin leeds, who would of 4rt that?good luck rest of season aneways, lee walsall

  • Im a bull for life we had a good game bit unlucky tho i got my tickets for brighton and oldham and im 14 we need backing away great day at leeds good fan base here at edgar street

  • It seems to me that any serious questions regarding GT's decisions and policies dont get on here! Why does he prefer Williams to Done? why continually chop and change the team? what good is a sub 3 mins from time when your not winning? We were here before GT and will be here when he's gone., i have great respect for him but we have a right to question his policies!

  • Jules Evesham Bull

Well done lads were looking more organised at the back now & the Rovers result seems along time ago now just a bit more luck in front of goal & were be all right. Don't worry about the Wednesbury casuals comment they all have sour grapes up their God knows what he would have been like if they lost, The Villa & Brum fans are the same the only sing when there winning! WE MAY BE BOTTOM BUT WE WILL ALWAYS BACK OUR TEAM TILL WE DIE! Hereford Utd for ever!
