Hereford United were comfortably defeated against Northampton Town on Tuesday, but only after an early Bulls' goal was ruled out in bizarre fashion.

Lee Morris appeared to have scored in the second minute as the ball was delivered into a crowd of players.

After awarding the goal, both the referee and his assistant made their way back to their starting positions on the half-way line.

However, Northampton's captain Craig Hinton then spoke to the assistant and persuaded him to consult the referee, who eventually decided to disallow the goal.

It was assumed that the goal had been ruled out for offside. However, the linesman's flag did not appear to have been raised when the goal was scored.

Northampton went on to score two soft goals either side of the break, before seeing the match out fairly comfortably in the second half.

United manager John Trewick was sent to the stands midway through the first half following his protests at the official's decision to rule out Hereford's seemingly legitmate strike, and also for a number of further questionable decisions from the referee's assistant.
