For the second game running Gavin McCallum was United's matchwinner, this time steering home from close-range after a Marc Pugh corner was headed goalwards by Darren Jones.
The Bulls, who had defeated Lincoln City on Tuesday to end their winless run of six games, had gone into the game with an unchanged side and after a cagey start found themselves in front after 23 minutes.
Torquay, who's last win was on Boxing Day against the Bulls, had started brightly with Adam Bartlett on hand to punch a dangerous looking free-kick away early on.
Marc Pugh was also helping out in the United defence, clearing a cross from Jake Thomson.
Thomson, playing just behind former Bulls trialist Chris Zebroski, sent a shot just wide of Bartlett's goal from 25 yards out but Hereford soon had attacks of their own
Firstly King saw a cross cleared by Guy Branston, before Pugh sent the first corner of the game into the area with Jones firing a few yards wide.
Thomson fired a shot wide from the edge of the area just before the 10 minute mark.
And Torquay full-back Adam Smith forced Bartlett into a save after a mazy run forward.
United then took the lead with Jones heading a Pugh corner goalwards. The ball fell to McCallum at the back post, just a few yards from goal, with the in-form player turning sharply to send his shot high into the back of the net.
Zebroski forced Bartlett into a comfortable save before McCallum almost doubled United's lead, striking the post with a great shot that had followed a neat 'Cruyff-turn' inside the area.
O'Kane sent a hopeful effort wide of the mark from 25 yards out, before Constantine forced a save from Michael Poke in the Gulls' goal.
With a couple of minutes left of the first half, Craig King did well to beat his man in the area, however having done the hard work, King could only send his volley tamely into the 'keeper's arms at the near post.
Then with a minute or two left of the first 45 minutes Pugh saw his goalbound effort cleared off the line by Smith.
Torquay made a change at half-time with Mustapha Carayol replaced by Elliot Benyon in a tactical change that saw Torquay switch to a two-up-top formation.
The first real action of the second half saw McCallum do well on the left to send a low cross into the box. Unfortunately it was just out of the reach of both Constantine and King.
Torquay started to prove a real threat for the Bulls, with Benyon turning on the left hand side of the area before firing a shot over the bar.
Benyon came closest to pulling Torquay back on a level terms, heading a Thomson cross onto the post, and then with five minutes left fired high over the bar from 12 yards out.
