Hereford United secured their second league win on their travels in 2009/10 at local rivals Cheltenham Town, despite playing more than half the match with 10 men.

The victory came a little more than a year after the Bulls' second away win in League One last season - also against the Robins.

Ryan Green's sumptuous individual effort after 25 minutes was enough to ensure all three points for the visitors, who had to work hard to preserve their lead after the break following James McQuilken's sending off shortly before the interval.

John Trewick made four changes to the side thumped 5-0 at Notts County, with Adam Bartlett and Richard Rose returning in place of suspended duo Chris Adamson and Paul Downing.

Ryan Valentine also earned a recall at the expense of Sam Gwynne, while Edrissa Sonko was handed a rare start ahead of Matt Done.

United striker Gavin McCallum threatened first in Gloucestershire, galloping down the right but scuffing his attempted pull-back to Leon Constantine, allowing goalkeeper Scott Brown to gather.

And the Robins soon settled. Michael Pook larruped comfortably over the crossbar from 25-yards, before a Lee Ridley long throw forced Daniel Preston to flick the ball towards his own goal, only for Bartlett to brilliantly divert the ball wide at full stretch.

Veteran marksman Julian Alsop headed the resulting corner the wrong side of the upright, while former Spurs midfielder David Hutton lashed over from long-range.

But having weathered Cheltenham's early pressure, the Bulls found their feet and proceeded to dominate the play for the remainder of the period.

Constantine had already tested Brown with a near-post header from Sonko's inviting right-wing centre.

But the former Hereford trialist - who played in a 3-2 friendly defeat to Wolves in August 2007 - could do nothing to deny Green scoring his first Football League goal, and first since netting the winner in the 2006 Conference Play-off Final.

The United right-back dashed into the hosts' half, before exchanging a perfectly-weighted one-two with Kenny Lunt and slotting the ball home.

Cheltenham soon responded, and should have levelled through the ageing Barry Hayles, who wastefully fired wide from six-yards following Hutton's pull-back, before Hutton himself saw a vicious 20-yarder superbly saved by Bartlett.

The hosts' cause was helped considerably shortly before the interval, as McQuilken collected his second caution of the half.

And they came close to making the most of their numerical advantage moments after the restart, as Alsop saw his point-blank header parried by Bartlett.

Hereford threatened sporadically in the second half. Marc Pugh's through-ball was a touch too heavy for the run of McCallum, while Lunt fired well wide from 25-yards.

However, defensively the Bulls had far more work to do, with Bartlett flying to his left to push away Pook's curling 20-yarder, before watching the same man side-foot over amid a melee.

McCallum could have put the result beyond doubt, firing high and wide after Constantine's low cross was not cleared by Andy Gallinagh.

Green came close to replicating his first-half strike, sprinting up-field only to see his goal-bound effort deflect over.

Instead, the hosts finished with four strikers on the pitch as they poured forward in search of parity.

Sonko was fortunate to escape two strong penalty appeals in quick succession after twice tangling with Hayles inside the danger-zone.

And after Justin Richards had seen his powerful drive well gathered by Bartlett, Elvis Hammond's injury-time pile-driver was parried to safety by the Hereford shot-stopper.
