Rovers Youth Beat Improving Bulls

Posted on: Mon 08 Mar 2010

Hereford Youth made the relatively short journey to play Bristol Rovers at Clifton Rugby Club on Saturday.

The game started in a similar pattern to the previous matches with Aidan Thomas working the home keeper in the first minute. The team were buoyed by the last performance and took the game to a strong Rovers side.

Thomas again broke free on the left but fired just passed the far post. Joe Lemar headed wide from the first of four corners in the opening quarter. Then a fine move ended with Chris Hyde playing Brendan Hackett in, whose well struck shot brought out a fine save from giant second year Holmes.

From the corner the home side broke and scored with their first shot of the game. The Bulls continued to dominate with Zac Brimble in fine form. The front pairing of Thomas and Hyde created openings but as with the previous week could not find the killer touch.

At the end of the break Head of Youth Darren Patterson commented that the best team were losing.

The second half saw the home side more on the offensive and in the 55th minute a miss-hit shot by Maggs looped over keeper Mat Gwynne. United continued to attack with Thomas a constant threat.

Luck continued to go against the Bulls when a ball was played back in from a corner with a home attacker all on his own - a move too quick for the linesman who failed to raise his flag-3-0.

Rovers now settled down and looked dangerous on the break. Hackett flashed a low cross into the area but it failed to find a yellow shirt.

Dean Lee also made lively runs down the left but again the final touch was missing.

The defence was caught flat-footed as Rovers slammed in their fourth and fifth goals much to the disgust of the visiting coaching staff.

The final score was an undeserved 5-0 defeat. The fact that the Rovers side contained four players who will be professionals next year and that all bar three of the Hereford side will be playing again next season was little consolation for a performance that deserved a better result.
