Youth Beaten By Bournemouth

Posted on: Wed 24 Mar 2010

The visitors for the Bulls' penultimate home game were AFC Bournemouth. Having drawn the previous two home games United went into this game confident of obtaining a result.

Unfortunately this was not to be the case as the visitors' quick movement, particularly in midfield, unsettled Hereford's pattern of play.

Hereford did, however, have the first attempt on goal with Aidan Thomas working the keeper in the fourth minute. At the other end Mat Gwynne brought off two fine saves to keep the scores level.

But he was helpless in the 24th minute as a low cross was turned in to give the visitors the lead.

Thomas provided a fine cross which skipper Joe Loftus just headed past the post. As the half came to a close Dean Lee hit the crossbar with a bullet-like free-kick from the edge of the area.

After stern words at half time from coach Gary Stevens the second half produced our best passage of the game.

Finally United gained more possession in midfield and Brendan Hackett made some incisive runs down the right.

A Will Loughman free-kick was headed wide by an unmarked Joe Lemar and Matthew Croose headed over from a Hackett corner.

The Bulls dominated play for 20 minutes but, as in several previous games, failed to convert possession into goals.

The visitors broke down the left and the defenders then stood off to allow Holmes to run onto the cross and place the ball past Gwynne.

Joe Lemar then allowed a long ball to go over his head and gave away a penalty but was let off when Mat Gwynne saved the spot-kick.

The game was now a much more open affair as both teams had more time on the ball.

With 15 minutes left the visitors won a free-kick on the right and the subsequent set piece evaded everyone and nestled in the back of the United net.

The final attack saw a Chris Hyde shot partially saved and the ball fizzed around the area until it was finally knocked out over the goal-line.

This probably summed up the difference between the sides with the visitors more determined in both boxes than United.
